Stephen Gutman Competition Pianist |
Born and based in London, Stephen Gutman is equally at ease as a soloist, chamber-music player and accompanist. He plays for international competitions and masterclasses, and has performed and recorded world-wide with many artists and ensembles including Endymion, the Esbjerg Ensemble and many more. Stephen has given numerous UK premieres, including works commissioned from leading and younger British composers. Some of these can be heard on www.criticalnotice.com. His acute sense of the continuing relevance of tradition in the music of our time inspired some of his most personal and widely praised ventures. These include The Debussy Studies Project and Les Enfants de Rameau modelled on the Rameau Variations by Dukas. In 2004, Stephen created a sequence of music events built up from the short fantasy What strikes the clocke by the 16th century composer Edward Gibbons. This integrated contributions by composers of all ages and backgrounds. His interest in the French Baroque inspired a series of the complete keyboard works of Rameau played on the modern piano. The first volume was released in 2007 on the Toccata label (TOCC 0050) to critical acclaim. Stephen has given classes, lectures and adjudicated at many of the British conservatoires.
