The
College has undergone significant expansion since its foundation
in 1930 and now consists of a community of 620 postgraduate students
from over 90 countries. The College serves all the academic and
professional institutions in London and maintains a loose balance
between nations, as it does between the broad faculties of Medicine,
Law, Art, the Humanities and Business. It is the first choice
for scholars from a wide range of international scholarship schemes
including those of Chevening, Fulbright, Commonwealth, Marshall
and Beit.
Goodenough College is a unique
establishment. It is acutely aware of its role as a promoter of
outstanding intellectual achievement and the pursuit of excellence
in all arenas, whilst simultaneously recognising its social obligation
to provide an environment in which serious, productive and well-informed
debate on issues facing today’s global environment can take
place.
Further to these ideals
the College is actively involved in the promotion and development
of music. It has in residence exceptionally talented musicians
from a variety of disciplines, many of whom are internationally
recognised and are regular performers in the world’s major
concert venues. Recognising that these young people represent
just a fraction of the wealth of musical talent attracted to the
United Kingdom, the College believes it right to host a prestigious
and culturally significant international music competition.
Goodenough College is
ideally situated to host such an event: it is centrally located,
boasts outstanding accommodation and performance facilities and,
whilst connected with academic and teaching institutions in the
United Kingdom, possesses an unusual quality of independence.
The College has in place the necessary administrative infrastructure
and is recognised as a premier conference centre in the heart
of London. The College also benefits from a highly influential
and proactive Board of Governors and a similarly august body of
Alumni. Its Patrons are HM The Queen and HRH Princess Alice, Duchess
of Gloucester.
